Written by- Cynthia Voigt

Ballantine Books, 1981

Dicey's mom leaves her and her family in a car on the way to their great aunt's house. With seven dollars Dicey has to lead her family to safety each night and walk many miles each day. When they finally reach their destiny, with help from strangers, they decide they want to find out who their grandmother is and possibly live with her. Dicey is the hero because she had courage to endure all the hardships they encountered. Without Dicey the family wouldn't have been able to survive.
