CONCORD HOSPITAL
On a windy day in May, three representatives from Rundlett Junior High School went to Concord Hospital to interview three volunteers. One was Mal Richards from Cardiac Rehab, another, Hal Hews from Messenger Transport, and lastly, Deb DeVost who is Concord Hospital's Teen Volunteer Coordinator.

Mal Richards
One volunteer that we interviewed was Mal Richards. He is a retired worker that volunteers in Cardiac Rehab. Cardiac Rehab is physical training after having heart surgery. Mal's job involves helping the nurse monitor the patients' hearts. All the patients are monitored with electros. Electros are little discs that are attached to the chest to monitor their heart rate.
We think that Mal Richards is a hero because he offers his time to help people who have had heart attacks, just like himself.

Hal Hews
Hal is a messenger transporter at the hospital. A messenger transporter is a person who goes around the hospital picking up blood and urine and then dropping it off at the lab. He also delivers important papers. Volunteers like Hal Hews are heroes for the important tasks they complete.

Deb DeVost
Deb is a teen volunteer coordinator. The teens that volunteer are from 13-17 years of age. Teens that volunteer can only volunteer one day a week for one to two hours. During the summer you can still volunteer once a week, but up to four hours. Deb picks the jobs, but she picks ones that fit a teen's abilities such as delivering mail/flowers,working in the gift shop, and more. Deb has never once rejected a volunteer. Adults are also allowed to volunteer.

These are three volunteers at the Concod Hospital that work in the Gift Shop.
Gift Shop
The gift shop at the hospital is a place where you can buy things for people that are ill. One of the women in the picture above has volunteered there for about thirty-two years. The gift shop has a lot of different items for sale such as baby clothes, toys, stickers, and many more. This is one of the many places that people at Concord Hospital can volunteer.

This is the Gift Shop at the Conord Hospital where you can buy a variety of things or work as a volunteer.

CREDITS
We would like to thank Concord Hospital for their cooperation in letting us job shadow and see what volunteers get to do during the hours that they work. We would also like to thank Olivia Henry for sparing her time and driving us to the hospital. The three students that went were Beth Forte, Laura-Beth MacRobert, and Kimberly Harmon. (Teacher's note: And thank you to the girls for making such an effort! ) We hope that sometime in the future other students will get the same opportunity.
